Long-term changes of right ventricular myocardial deformation and remodeling studied by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension following pulmonary thromboendarterectomy.

•Full recovery of RV contractility after PEA is not achieved in CTEPH patients.•Changes in RV GLS and GCS correlate with regression of RV hypertrophy after PEA.•RV GLS and GCS by CMR are associated with the invasively derived afterload parameter Ea.•RV-PA coupling improved after PEA but remained reduced compared with healthy controls.•RA and RV dimensions and volumes normalized 12 months after PEA.
