•A facile biocompatible method was developed to prepare RGO/Ag nanocomposite.•RGO/Ag nanocomposites possessed excellent photothermal effect.•RGO/Ag nanocomposites achieved enhanced synergetic antibacterial activities.•15 μg/mL and 30 μg/mL of RGO/Ag nanocomposite killed nearly 100 % E. coli and Kp.
