•Anxiety, depression, and PTSD were highly prevalent in ICU survivors at one-year follow-up.•Neuropsychiatric outcome was similarly unfavorable in different subgroups of ICU survivors.•Interventions to improve neuropsychiatric outcomes should not only target specific patients.
