A randomized controlled trial evaluating integrated versus phased application of evidence-based psychotherapies for military veterans with comorbid PTSD and substance use disorders.

•Integrating MET and PE was not more effective than phasing the treatments.•Both approaches yielded meaningful reductions in problematic drinking and drug use.•PTSD symptom reduction was more modest than typically achieved with PE.•Treatment dropout was high; few participants attended all treatment sessions.
