•ACEs and depression are independently associated with diabetes and CVD.•Additive ACE indices may be insufficient to classify and quantify risk.•ACE sub-types included low adversity, verbal/physical abuse, sexual abuse, and high adversity.•High adversity in only those with depression was positively associated with CVD.•Sexual abuse, independent of depression, was positively associated with diabetes.
