Regional healthcare costs and burden of injury associated with electric scooters

•770 e-scooter associated presentations were identified over a period of seven months, 246 of these treated in hospital, 75 requiring admission.•The 246 presentations occupied 5569 hospital bed-hours, 441 inpatient scans and 49 patients required operations.•27% of injuries were thought to have alcohol as a contributing factor.•E-scooter injury rate estimated to be 60 per 100,000 trips and hospital presentation rate of 20 per 100,000 trips.•Combined cost attributable to e-scooter injures was $1,303,155 (NZD) for the Auckland region with an estimated average cost per injury of $1,693 and average cost per shared e-scooter of $1,300.
