Can BDDCS illuminate targets in drug design?

•We mapped BDDCS categories onto mode-of-action drug target families.•We discuss the distribution of BDDCS categories over target families, as well as therapeutic categories.•Evidence suggests that (sub)cellular compartment location of the protein targets may explain the preference for specific BDDCS class drugs.•Early awareness of BDDCS preference could help bias chemical libraries as well as lead series towards specific pharmacokinetic property profiles for certain target families.
