•Flow patterns of R-1234ze(E) in PHE and SCT are investigated through visualization.•Asymmetric flow is observed in PHE owing to different flow paths for each phase.•Flow pattern maps of R-1234ze(E) in PHE and SCT are developed and compared.•Relationship between flow patterns and frictional pressure drop in PHE is analyzed.
