Experimental study on the novel rolling-sliding integrated auxiliary bearing in active magnetic bearing during rotor drop

•A novel auxiliary bearing is studied, compared with a traditional one.•The rotor center orbit with the novel bearing is simpler and more focused.•The impact force with the novel bearing is much less.•The orbit and the force with the novel bearing don’t change much with speed.•The contact point with the novel bearing is more stable.
