•One of the few skarn-type, commercial deposits in the Zha-Shan ore district.•Granitoids were mainly sourced from thickened lower crust with adakitic affinity.•Oxidized mantle component was the most likely factor to improve magma fO2.•The deposit was formed in the Qinling intracontinental orogeny during 141–138 Ma.
