•Insomnia severity was associated with all four empirically-based OCS dimensions.•Insomnia severity was most strongly associated with unacceptable obsessive thoughts.•Anxiety, depression, and stress differentially explained the relationship between sleep and OCS.•Significant predictors differed across OCS dimensions when accounting for sleep.
