Do sacred texts glorifying Allah facilitate Muslims’ trust and trustworthiness? Evidence from field experiments in China

•The religious sacred texts related to prosocial values can facilitate prosocial tendencies.•The Muslims participating in the trust game learned the texts excerpted from the Quran and the Hadith, which focus only on glorifying Allah and are unrelated to prosocial morality.•Although the Muslims showed trust and trustworthiness to others, learning the sacred texts glorifying Allah had no effects on either of these characteristics.•The unconditional kindness and reciprocity could explain trust and trustworthiness, but learning of this kind of texts could not facilitate trust and trustworthiness by affecting the function of these prosocial tendencies.•The results of this study achieve a more complete understanding of how sacred texts could affect prosocial behaviors.
