Solar photocatalytic disinfection using ink-jet printed composite TiO2/SiO2 thin films on flexible substrate: Applicability to drinking and marine water

•Composite TiO2/SiO2 films were prepared by sol-gel and ink-jet printing.•Hydrophobic TiO2/SiO2 were more efficient than hydrophilic ones.•Autochthonous bacteria are significantly more resistant to SODIS than not autochthonous.•Decrease of photocatalytic activity for seawater was observed after ten cycles.
