•Sodium vaporization is key to triggering sodium-water reaction (SWR) runaway.•SWR proceeds first with a surface reaction and then a gas-phase reaction.•The delay time of SWR decreases exponentially as water temperature is increased.•A simple differential model reproduces SWR mechanism and experimental data.
