Free chlorine induced phototransformation of graphene oxide in water: Reaction kinetics and product characterization

•Enhanced oxidation of water-stable GO in the presence of chlorine and UV light irradiation.•Rate constants are affected by Cl2, pH, dissolved O2, radical species, and initial GO coupon size.•Partial mineralization was observed, with a subset of products resistant to further oxidation.
