•Microalgae growth is unsustainable under non-sterile heterotrophic conditions.•Yeast achieved high levels of nutrient removal in non-sterile municipal wastewater.•Crabtree positive yeast produced ethanol whilst treating municipal wastewater.•Wild yeast achieved 92.6% orthophosphate, 100% nitrate and 100% ammonia removal.
