A stiffness derivative local hypercomplex-variable finite element method for computing the energy release rate

•A new accurate and efficient method is developed and demonstrated for computing the energy release rate.•The method is an application of the stiffness derivative method.•The method is as efficient as the J integral method and often more accurate.•An extension to second order derivatives is also developed and demonstrated.
