•Metalloporphyrins doped Pdots with amplified singlet oxygen quantum yield were synthesized for PDT.•The novel triplet-triplet energy transfer mechanism occurred in the metalloporphyrins doped Pdots was described.•The metalloporphyrin-loaded Pdots show excellent therapeutic effects in PDT in vitro assays.
