•DFT is used to examine hydrodeoxygenation of furfuryl alcohol at TiO2/Pd interfaces.•Reduced TiO2/Pd interfaces activate the CO bond of furfuryl alcohol.•TiO2/Pd interfaces provide bifunctionality for hydrodeoxygenation.•Interface sites do not accelerate non-selective decarbonylation (CC breaking).
