Cytoglobin deficiency potentiates Crb1-mediated retinal degeneration in rd8 mice.

•Cytoglobin is expressed in mature inner retinal neurons (retinal ganglion cells and amacrine cells).•Cytoglobin deficiency potentiates cell polarity defects in Crb1-deficient rd8 retina.•Cytoglobin deficiency results in cell polarity gene alterations.•Cytoglobin may explain in part the diversity of CRB1 related retinopathies seen in patients as a modulator of this pathway.
