•We tested the effect of oral amino acids (AA) for 1 wk in older hospitalized patients.•AA reduced length of stay, 90-d postdischarge rehospitalization, and falls.•AA prevented the loss of muscle function owing to low mobility during hospitalization.•AA limited the increase of circulating interleukins and oxidative stress markers.
