•CD47-targeting bismuth selenide nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized.•The functionalized nanoparticles enhanced the phagocytic activity of macrophages.•The functionalized nanoparticles achieved improved photothermal therapy.•Toxicity studies indicated good biocompatibility of the nanoparticles.
