Primary forest distribution and representation in a Central European landscape: Results of a large-scale field-based census

•Field-based census identified primary forests not classified by remote sensing.•Primary forests represent only 0.21% of the study region, Slovakia.•Inaccessibility determined the clustered distribution of remaining primary forests.•Several primary forest habitat types are completely absent in contemporary landscapes.
