•Inclusion of soluble fibre after weaning decreased mortality but it was still high.•Soluble fibre inclusion before weaning had no effect of in post-weaning mortality.•Soluble fibre effect was related to the ileal mucin flow and fibre fermentation.•Minor effects of n-6/n-3 ratio on rabbit health status and digestion.
