•β-glucan yields were improved combining advanced extraction technologies.•Supercritical CO2 extraction could be used as an effective pretreatment.•Extracts contained β- and α-glucans and a mannose/galactose heteropolymer.•UAE + SWE and SFE + UAE/SWE extracts inhibited HMGCR activity.•The same extracts reduced 20–32% release of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
