Concepts for Advancing the Use of Process Data in Electrical Discharge Machining

The manufacturing industry commonly benefits from model-based understanding that correlates process data and physical process conditions. In many cases, this enables the identification of machining results. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) incorporates unique electrical signals that are used efficiently for process control and process stability documentation. Unfortunately, correlations of the data to actual physical conditions during the presence of each discharge that eventually yield material modifications are scarcely investigated. This paper addresses this issue through the compilation of concepts to establish a model-based understanding in EDM to accomplish the digital replication of machining results.
