•The heat transfer of gas-liquid slug flow was experimentally examined.•Effect of flow parameters on two-phase heat transfer was comprehensively analysed.•Circumferential temperature distribution and local heat transfer coefficient were measured.•A semi-theoretical heat transfer correlation of gas-liquid slug flow was developed.
