Quantification of anthropogenic food subsidies to an avian facultative scavenger in urban and rural habitats

•7.5% of households were involved in the feeding of an avian facultative scavenger.•Close to 0.9 kg of food per km2 was daily provided by the public across the landscape.•80% of the food was unintentionally provided waste known to be targeted by kites.•Urban and rural anthropogenic food availability was high, even higher in winter.•This human-scavenger interaction should be considered in future scavenger studies.
