Doctoral-prepared nurses in the Veterans Health Administration: A cross-sectional survey

•Veterans Health Administration (VHA) nurses with any doctoral degree were surveyed to determine their responsibilities and role activities.•Findings document higher engagement in research for those with PhD/DNS degrees.•Higher engagement in clinical roles for DNP/APRNs.•Higher engagement in administration and education for all other doctoral degrees in health-related fields.•VHA aims to align academic degree with nursing roles and improve utilization of doctoral-prepared nurses.
