•Estimation of CTOA using EWF test is recommended for sheet steels.•The method has been applied for DP 780 grade automotive steel sheet (thickness = 1 mm).•The estimated CTOA is independent of machined notch tip radius of DENT specimen.•The essential work of fracture and estimated CTOD depends on notch tip radius.
