•All the latinoamerica companies implementing BRC standard are exporters, with 68% exporting more than 75% of their sales.•The components that group the motivations: ethical, efficiency, legitimacy and commercial.•The commercial and legitimacy motivations do not record significant differences across these Latin American countries.•The most common barriers for Latin American companies are related to financial issues.
