•A new methodology to assess the maximum CO2 storage capacity in shales is proposed.•The new method reflects the flow, diffusion, and adsorption processes of CO2 in shales.•It also considers natural fractures, hydraulic fractures, and SRV.•Model validation and case study are performed.
