•In vivo micronucleus studies support the lack of genotoxicity of 2,4-decadienal.•No induction of micronuclei in bone marrow or peripheral blood cells of rats.•No evidence of genotoxic potential was found up to the maximum tolerated dose.•No evidence of genotoxicity was found by two administration routes of 2,4-decadienal.
