Efficacy and safety of islet autotransplantation after total pancreatectomy in chronic pancreatitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis including 17 studies

•What is already known on this subject? Islet autotransplantation (IAT), in conjunction with total pancreatectomy (TP), is used to relieve pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis, while reducing the incidence of brittle diabetes. However, the efficacy and safety of islet autotransplantation after total pancreatectomy (TPIAT) are still unclear.•What are the new findings? TPIAT can effectively relieve pain and reduce the risk of surgical diabetes with no increase in mortality or morbidity. Even if patients cannot achieve insulin independence, they can significantly improve the quality of life.•How might it impact on clinical practice in the foreseeable future? Chronic pancreatitis who underwent total pancreatectomy should be treated with islet autotransplantation to prevent surgical diabetes.
