•GATA2 and PITX1 can activate the chicken CRHR2 gene promoter.•PITX1 requires a functional GATA2 response element (RE) to stimulate CRHR2 promoter activity.•The PITX1 and GATA2 REs are highly conserved in non-mammalian species.•NR5A1 suppresses both GATA2- and PITX1-induced CRHR2 promoter activity.
