摘要
•In psychosis, experiencing visual hallucinations (VH) is related to experiencing hallucinations in other modalities.•VH in psychosis show great clinical variance in many ways. Generally they have the properties of real perceptions.•Most patients experience multiple VH types. VH are mostly complex, consisting of people and animals, followed by simple, then geometric VH. Experiencing only simple VH is rare.•They range from ‘appropriate’ and neutral to peculiar, frightening and delusion-associated.•They show great overlap with VH in Parkinson's disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.
