•PTSD, difficulties regulating emotions, and alcohol misuse were positively correlated.•PTSD was indirectly related to alcohol misuse through difficulties regulation positive emotions.•Gender moderated the mediated relations among PTSD, difficulties regulating positive emotions, and alcohol misuse.•Results highlight gender-specific intervention targets for reducing alcohol misuse.
