D-dimer levels enhance the discriminatory capacity of bleeding risk scores for predicting in-hospital bleeding events in acute pulmonary embolism.

•Estimating individual bleeding risk is based on prediction scores.•Elevated D-dimer (DD) levels have been shown to predict bleeding in APE.•We compared four bleeding risk prediction scores in a real-life acute pulmonary embolism population.•In this study, patients with hemorrhagic complications had higher DD levels.•DD levels enhanced the discriminatory capacity of tested bleeding risk scores.
