A Survey on the Parametric Approaches and Tools Used in the Design Process by Practitioners

This paper presents the results of a survey questioning professionals and academics about the use of parametric approaches in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) sector. Indeed the development and application of these approaches in the design process is growing fast and requiring deeper understanding. The objective of this survey is to evaluate the role of digital tools, in particular parametric modelling tools in AEC practices. Thus, the survey focused on the role and different approaches to parametric design, and aimed to reveal the impact and usefulness of these approaches through the design process. The results indicate that while the interest and use of these approaches is obvious in different field of activities, parametric design approaches have some limitations and remain used exclusively by experts and large-scale companies.
