•Col (V) preferentially binds to murine splenic B1-B cells.•Col (V) induces rapid production of anti-col(V) antibodies, as well as a specific transcriptional signature in murine splenic B cells.•The rapid de novo production of anti-col(V) antibodies is associated with a significant increased incidence of severe (Grade 3) PGD in a cohort of lung transplant recipients.
