•The ODD/DP+ group's response differed from both the ODD/DP- and the typical children.•The ODD/DP+ presents a higher sympathetic arousal for anger and sadness faces.•The CBCL-DP is associated with increased emotional reactivity.•The CBCL-DP could identify ODD patients with sympathetic arousal.
