•UPEC-induced IL-1RA release from bladder epithelial cells is mediated by α-hemolysin.•Caspase-1 and NLRP3 are involved in UPEC-induced IL-1RA release.•IL-1RA deficient bladder epithelial cells are less prone to be colonized by UPEC.•IL-1RA has a regulatory effect on several inflammatory proteins in bladder epithelial cells.
