The association between disrespect and abuse of women during childbirth and postpartum depression: Findings from the 2015 Pelotas birth cohort study.

•18% of the women experienced at least one mistreatment type during childbirth.•Verbal abuse increased the likelihood of having postpartum depression.•The effect of verbal abuse was greater among women without antenatal depression.•Physical abuse increased the odds of having moderate/severe postpartum depression.
