•The processing parameters impacted on the relative density and mechanical integrity of LPBFed Mg.•The corrosion resistance of LPBFed Mg cannot be assessed by volume of defects alone.•Loosely fused materials and un-melted powder lowered the corrosion resistance of LPBFed Mg.•Sufficient energy input should be used to obtain reasonable corrosion resistance of LPBFed Mg.
