Genome-wide association study of the oil content in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and identification of GhPRXR1, a candidate gene for a stable QTLqOC-Dt5-1

•Thirteen cottonseed oil content QTLs associated with 53 common SNPs on 13 chromosomes were identified in multiple environments.•Through a combination of transcriptome and qRT-PCR analyses, the novel gene GhPRXR1, located in the stable QTLqOC-Dt5-1, was identified.•By VIGS in upland cotton and overexpression in yeast, we found that GhPRXR1 influenced oil accumulation.
