Template-free cyclic hexavanadate: Synthesis, characterization, solid-state structure, and solution-state dynamics

A polyoxovanadate bearing 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate functionality has been prepared under hydrothermal conditions. The solid state structure features a template free, cyclic hexavanadate motif, built from corner linked 5- and 6-coordinate V5+. Dissolution of the hexavanadate yields dimeric species that promote very high photodecomposition of organic dyes under ultraviolet light irradiation.
