•Cobalt-Molybdenum Nitrides with hollow 3D structures and 2D nanosheets were fabricated for enhanced OER.•Three different morphologies with large specific surface areas are controlled by changing reaction conditions.•The formation processes of samples are revealed by coordination of the MOFs.
