Personality traits in action: A cognitive behavioral version of the social cognitive paradigm
Personality and Individual Differences(2019)
摘要
Eysenck's (1983) personality paradigm was too narrow, but his goal of integrating personality trait studies with experimental psychology remains a laudable one. Personality traits are informative concerning the structure of personality, but a complete science will integrate traits with mechanisms of operation while accounting for both between-person and within-person differences. Cognitive tasks are uniquely suited to serve this integration function, particularly when they are designed to model social-emotional and behavioral processes rather than information processing achievements more narrowly considered. Following from considerations of this type, the present contribution will illustrate concrete ways in which cognitive or behavioral tasks can be used to understand both personality trait functioning and person by situation interactions as well as the sorts of processes that are likely to underlie divergent patterns of reactivity and regulation in daily life. Embracing versions of these ideas can greatly add to the explanatory side of the descriptive-explanatory divide.
