•Predicting magnetic ground states in transition metal tri-halide monolayers.•Only FeX3 monolayer is found to be anti-ferromagnetic, while the rest are ferromagnetic.•Clean spin-polarised Dirac bands found in monolayer MnF3, MnCl3, MnBr3, NiF3 and NiCl3.•VX3 and NiX3 family of monolayers are room temperature ferromagnets.
