Reduced depth stacked constructed wetlands for enhanced urban wastewater treatment

•COD and nitrogen removals are enhanced by using shallow stages.•The stacking of the stages reduces the area requirement.•Convective oxygen input is boosted by consecutive fill and drain cycles.•A conductive material further enhances COD degradation and denitrification.•The total height is smaller than in a traditional vertical treatment wetland.
